MBBS Abroad for Indian Students: Why It Is So Popular
Every year thousands of Indian students study medicine overseas. The reasons are simple. Seats in Indian government colleges are limited, private college fees can cross one crore rupees, and many foreign universities offer an English-medium degree at a much lower total cost. For many families, an overseas medical degree is the practical way to reach the same goal.
The decision still needs care. The right country, the right university and a clear understanding of NMC rules decide whether your degree is valid in India. This guide explains each step in plain language so you can plan with confidence.
- NMC-listed universities with English-medium teaching
- Admission on merit, with no donation or capitation fee
- Modern labs, clinical training and a multicultural classroom
- A route to practise in India after the licensing exam
MBBS Abroad Eligibility 2026
NEET Requirement
As per NMC rules, Indian students must qualify NEET UG to be eligible to study medicine abroad. A university that offers admission without NEET puts your future registration in India at risk, so avoid such offers.
Age and Academic Criteria
- 17 years of age on or before 31 December of the admission year
- 12th with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English
- Minimum marks in PCB as set by NMC for your category
- Valid passport and medical fitness
MBBS Abroad Admission Process: Step by Step
The process is the same for most countries, though dates and documents differ by university. Starting early gives you more choice of seats and a calmer visa process.

Best Countries for MBBS Abroad in 2026
Tap a country to see its page, or read the short guide below.
MBBS in Russia
Russia is the most popular destination by volume and has the largest number of NMC-listed universities. The programme runs for six years, the teaching is in English, and the cost sits in the lower to moderate range. Winters are very cold, so students should be ready for the climate. Read the full MBBS in Russia guide.
MBBS in Georgia
Georgia offers a six-year programme, a mild climate and a European style of teaching. Fees are usually higher than Russia, Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan, and fewer universities are listed by NMC, so a careful shortlist matters more here. Read the full MBBS in Georgia guide.
MBBS in Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan has a six-year English-medium programme at lower to moderate cost and is popular with budget-conscious students. NMC has raised compliance questions about some institutions in the past, so always verify the exact university on the current list. Read the full MBBS in Uzbekistan guide.
MBBS in Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan is generally the lowest in total cost, which makes it attractive for families with a tight budget. The course is six years, winters are cold, and the quality varies between universities, so choose with guidance. Read the full MBBS in Kyrgyzstan guide.
MBBS in Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan balances affordability with NMC compliance and offers smaller classes than many Russian universities. The duration is five to six years depending on the university, so confirm the exact length before applying. Read the full MBBS in Kazakhstan guide.
MBBS in Nepal
Nepal is close to India, travel is easy and the 5.5-year course is taught in English. The total cost is on the higher side compared with Central Asia, but many families prefer it for its closeness and familiar culture. Read the full MBBS in Nepal guide.
MBBS in Bangladesh
Bangladesh offers a five-year course followed by one year of internship, with colleges in Dhaka that are popular with students from West Bengal and Bihar. Food, language and culture feel familiar, which helps first-time students settle in. Read the full MBBS in Bangladesh guide.
MBBS in Egypt
Egypt has a longer programme, commonly five to six years plus a one-year internship, and uses Arabic during clinical training. It suits students who are comfortable with a longer course and a different cultural setting. Ask for the current fee sheet before deciding. Read the full MBBS in Egypt guide.
MBBS Abroad Fees 2026: Total Cost Explained
The fee quoted in an advertisement is rarely the full cost. A realistic budget adds living costs, visa, travel and exam fees on top of tuition. Here is how to read the numbers.
Tuition Fee
Tuition is charged every year and differs by country and university. Ask for the fee of all six years, not only the first year, and check whether it can increase.
Hostel, Food and Living Costs
Hostel and food are usually separate from tuition. In colder countries, add the cost of winter clothing and heating.
Other Costs to Plan For
- Visa, medical checks and registration
- Return flights and local travel
- Health insurance
- Preparation for the FMGE licensing exam
Indicative Total Budget
Published 2026 estimates for the full six-year course, including living costs, are roughly as follows.
- Kyrgyzstan: about Rs 17 lakh to Rs 28 lakh
- Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan): about Rs 20 lakh to Rs 40 lakh
- Russia: about Rs 26 lakh to Rs 44 lakh
- Nepal: about Rs 28 lakh to Rs 45 lakh
These are indicative ranges and change every year. Always ask for the current fee sheet of the exact university in writing.
Cheapest Country for Overseas MBBS
Kyrgyzstan is generally the lowest in total cost, followed by options in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Russia. A low fee is only a good deal if the university is NMC-listed and its graduates pass the licensing exam. A cheaper course that you cannot use in India is the most expensive choice of all.
NMC Rules and FMGE for Overseas MBBS
Course Duration and Internship
NMC expects the course to run for at least 54 months, followed by 12 months of internship. Both must be completed at the same foreign university.
FMGE Licensing Exam
After returning to India, a foreign medical graduate must pass the FMGE licensing exam (NMC has announced that NExT may replace it, so check the current notice) and, as per current NMC rules, complete a supervised internship at an NMC-recognised hospital in India before full registration to practise. Pass rates differ a lot between universities, so ask for the pass record of the one you are considering.
Rules You Cannot Skip
- NEET qualification before admission
- An NMC-listed university
- The full course and internship at one university
- Registration after the licensing exam
How to Choose a Safe University
Checklist Before You Pay
- Confirm the university is on the current NMC list
- Ask for the FMGE pass record
- Visit or speak to current Indian students
- Get every fee, hostel and insurance cost in writing
Mistakes to Avoid
Choosing only by fee
The lowest fee can hide poor clinical training or a weak exam record.
Trusting verbal promises
Anything not written in the admission agreement can be denied later.
NMC updates its list from time to time, so verify the university on the official NMC website before paying any fee.
