MBBS in Russia 2026: Fees, Eligibility, Universities and Admission Guide

Understand NMC rules, real costs in rupees, climate and the full admission process, so you can choose a safe Russian medical university with confidence.

  • NMC-listed universities
  • No donation
  • English medium

Why Indian Students Choose MBBS in Russia

Russia has been a leading destination for Indian medical aspirants for decades. Government seats in India are limited, private college fees can run into crores, and Russian medical universities offer a six-year English-medium degree at a much lower total cost. For many families, this is the most practical way to turn a NEET result into a medical career.

Russia also has a long tradition of medical education, large teaching hospitals and a big community of Indian students, which makes the first year easier. The key is to pick a university that follows NMC rules and to understand every cost and risk before you pay.

  • English-medium programmes in the universities we recommend
  • No donation or capitation fee
  • Large Indian student community and Indian-style mess in many hostels
  • Modern labs and clinical exposure in big hospitals

Is MBBS in Russia Valid in India?

Yes, if the university is listed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for Indian students and you follow NMC rules. The course must include at least 54 months of study and 12 months of internship at the same university. After returning, you must pass the FMGE licensing exam to register and practise in India.

Lists of recognised universities change from time to time, and websites quote different numbers. Verify your shortlisted university on the official NMC website before paying any fee.

MBBS in Russia Eligibility for Indian Students 2026

NEET Requirement

Indian students must qualify NEET UG to be eligible for medical admission abroad. A university that offers a seat without NEET puts your registration in India at risk.

Age and Academic Criteria

  • 17 years of age on or before 31 December of the admission year
  • 12th with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English
  • Minimum marks in PCB as required by NMC and the university, commonly around 50 percent for the general category, so confirm for your university
  • Valid passport and medical fitness

Admission Process for Russian Medical Universities: Step by Step

The process is straightforward when you start early. Most universities open applications after the NEET result, and the new session begins around September.

MBBS in Russia Fees 2026: Total Cost in INR for Indian Students

Fees depend on the university and the city. Published 2026 estimates for the full six-year course range widely, roughly from Rs 18 lakh to Rs 45 lakh, with the lower end usually in smaller cities. Always compare the total package, not just the first-year fee.

Tuition Fee

Tuition is paid every year. Ask for the fee of all six years and check whether it can increase.

Hostel and Living Cost

Hostel is usually charged separately and food costs depend on the city. Add warm clothing for winter.

Other Costs

  • Student visa, medical checks and registration
  • Return flights
  • Local health insurance, often Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000 a year
  • Russian language classes and FMGE preparation

These are indicative figures from published sources. Always take the current fee sheet of your exact university in writing, with every charge listed.

Best Universities for MBBS in Russia: How to Choose

City Matters as Much as the University

Russian medical universities are spread across cities such as Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kazan and Volgograd. Bigger cities cost more but offer more hospitals and flights, while smaller cities can be cheaper and calmer.

What to Check Before You Pay

  • The university is on the current NMC list for Indian students
  • Teaching in English for the entire course
  • Hospital attached to the university and patient load
  • Number of Indian students, hostel and mess
  • FMGE pass record of past Indian graduates

Mistakes to Avoid When Choosing a University

Choosing only by fee

A low fee can hide weak clinical training or a poor exam record.

Trusting ranking lists blindly

Many websites rank universities as advertisements. Verify recognition on the official NMC site instead.

Accepting verbal promises

Anything not written in the admission agreement can be denied later. Keep every receipt and the signed agreement.

Course Duration, Language and Curriculum

The course runs for six years in total, which includes the internship. Teaching is in English, and students also complete Russian language classes in the early years so they can talk to patients during clinical postings. Basic Russian is also useful for daily life outside the campus.

NMC expects the whole course and the internship to be completed at the same university, with in-person teaching and clinical training, so ask the university how it meets these rules before you pay.

Year-by-Year Subjects in the Medical Course

Basic Sciences

The first years cover anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and Russian language, along with medical ethics.

Para-Clinical Subjects

Pathology, microbiology, pharmacology and forensic medicine connect basic science to disease.

Clinical Subjects

The final years cover medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and community medicine in the university hospital. The schedule differs by university, so ask for the syllabus.

Life in Russia for Indian Students

Food and Hostel

Many hostels have Indian-style mess or kitchens, and Indian students often cook together. The food is easy to manage in big student cities.

Climate

Winters are very cold, with temperatures far below freezing in many cities, while summers are mild. Carry proper winter clothing and expect indoor heating.

Safety, Flights and Payments

Check the latest travel advisory of the Ministry of External Affairs before you travel. International sanctions have affected flights and banking in recent years, so ask the university in writing how fees can be paid through an authorised channel and plan your travel route early.

Student Visa and Travel to Russia

After the admission letter, the university arranges an official invitation for your student visa. You apply through the authorised visa channel with your passport, invitation, photographs and medical documents. Apply early because processing times vary.

  • Receive the admission letter and fee receipt
  • Get the invitation and complete visa documents
  • Book your ticket after the visa is approved
  • Report to the university and hostel on time

NMC Rules and FMGE After Studying Medicine in Russia

After returning to India, a foreign medical graduate must pass the FMGE licensing exam (NMC has announced that NExT may replace it, so check the current notice) and, as per current NMC rules, complete a supervised internship at an NMC-recognised hospital in India before full registration. Pass rates differ a lot between universities, so ask for the record of the one you are considering. Keep your degree, internship certificate and registration papers safe.

  • NEET qualification before admission
  • An NMC-listed university
  • The full course and internship at one university
  • Registration after the licensing exam

Career After Studying Medicine in Russia

After your internship you return to India, pass the FMGE and register with NMC. You can then practise, prepare for postgraduate entrance exams, or plan further training abroad. Many graduates start FMGE preparation in the final years so that they can clear it in the first attempt, and a good university will support you with revision classes and past records.

Keep your degree, internship certificate and transcripts attested and safe, since you will need them for registration and for any later application.
